“The Osteon“
This depiction was composed as part of a digital student resource, Anatomy and Physiology I: An Interactive Histology Atlas. The atlas was created by faculty from Augusta University’s College of Science and Mathematics and Medical College of Georgia through an Affordable Learning Georgia grant. The osteon, the functional unit of compact/cortical bone, is depicted here as a single entity. Undoubtedly, however, it interacts with many other osteons, whose morphology differ slightly but form connecting structures. These structures, housed within a central or Haversian canal, provide the nutritive basis for a whole bone, and include blood vessels, nerves, and lymph vessels.
